- Disability-related ExpensesMHSD can help you understand and, where eligible assist you to receive financial assistance with a range of services including but not limited to behavioral health, communication, nutrition, parent education/training, vocational/educational and personal care attendant services, etc.
- Respite Care for Caregivers
- Intermediate Care FacilitiesSometimes people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities cannot have their needs met in their families’ home. MHSD can assist through support coordination to locate 24 hour care facilities.
- Nursing Home AssessmentPreadmission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR): If nursing care services are necessary for a person with I/DD, an assessment is required to determine the necessity of these services. No person, regardless of their disability, should have to live in a nursing home to meet his or her support needs, if they can be meet in another environment.
- Positive Behavioral Support ServicesSometimes people with developmental disabilities present with challenging behaviors. If this occurs, mental health professionals are available to work with family members, support teams, service providers, school officials and employers to assist the person in developing more appropriate skills and behaviors. Depending on the availability of services or the level of services needed, this service may be provided by MHSD or by the Greater New Orleans Resource Center on Developmental Disabilities (GNORC).
- Psychiatric ServicesMany people with developmental disabilities also have co-occurring mental health needs and will benefit from medication to reduce symptoms related to the disorder. In those cases, psychiatric services are available in MHSD Behavioral Health Clinics.
- Medicaid Waiver ProgramHome and Community Based Waiver Programs provide services and supports to individuals in their home to help maintain their self-care, promote and foster independence, community integration and participation. Current Programs include: Children’s Choice Waiver – For children 0 -18 Supports Waiver – For adults 18 and over to access Vocational/Supported Employment Services Residential Options Waiver (ROW) New Opportunities Waiver (NOW) MHSD can guide you through the process of eligibility and submitting a waiver request for the State’s Request for Services Registry. Please note that submitting a request does not automatically mean a waiver opportunity is granted. Waiver offers are made based on both date of application and legislative funding. - Early Childhood Services (0-5yrs)Outpatient services to children whose parents are concerned about emotional, behavioral or relationship problems.
- Psychiatric Evaluations/ AssessmentsThe collection of relevant clinical information in an effort to reach a conclusion about how and why a person is behaving abnormally and how that person might be helped.
- Mental Health & Substance Use Evaluations/Assessments
- Medication Management
- Diagnostic & Psychological Testinga process used to try and determine the core components of a person’s psychological or mental health problems, personality, IQ, or some other component. It is also a process that helps identifies not just weaknesses of a person, but also their strengths.
- Psychosocial InterventionsActivities used to modify behavior, emotional state or feelings.
- First Episode Psychosis Services (15-21yrs)program to treat first break schizophrenia adolescents and young adults.
- School-based Prevention ServicesPrimary substance abuse and gambling prevention services for children and youth.

- AssessmentsThe collection of relevant clinical information in an effort to reach a conclusion about how and why a person is behaving abnormally and how that person might be helped.
- ReferralsSending someone for consultation, or further services to address behavior.
- Crisis Intervention
- Peer SupportAssistance by people with personal experiences of recovery from mental health, substance use, or trauma conditions, who receive specialized training and supervision to guide and support others who are experiencing similar mental health, substance use or trauma issues toward wellness.
- Case ManagementA collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation, care coordination, evaluation, and advocacy for options and services. It is intended to meet an individual’s and family’s comprehensive health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes.
- Medication ManagementOutpatient treatment provided by a qualified physician, or others whose scope of practice includes prescribing medication, as-needed, along with ongoing medical monitoring/evaluation to optimize safe, effective and appropriate care.
- Individual TherapySometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counseling” – is a process through which individuals work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors, and work through challenging or influential memories.
- Group TherapyA special form of therapy in which a small number of people meet together under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist to help themselves and one another. Group therapy helps people learn about themselves and improve their interpersonal relationships.
- Addiction Treatment (Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling)The management and care of persons who suffer from the brain disease of addiction to drugs and or alcohol. Treatment should be tailored to the unique needs of the individual, with services provided by trained professionals in the field of addiction.
